Yellow for Vincent

"Thinking about Things"

Although I always thought things to be meaningless, they stay behind when the person they belong to is no longer with eus, the one that was truly important,
I now feel entirely different, those little worthless things mean the world to me.
They conjure up the person and place it once belonged to, memories.
I'm all about memories, you can't buy them but they are so valuable. You can carry them with you wherever you go, they are weightless and for free and can bring back a dear one for a moment when needed .
They can comfort you.
Our house is filled with things like that and that's why I like to paint them and share them with you.
They can tell stories and you can see your own ones in them.
I like that and hope you do too.
So in that way things can be very meaningful , you can gift them to make someone happy , use them if you need them or treasure them!
This table will accompany me to my exhibition starting 17th of October alongside other tablescapes and Little Happymakers.

Yellow for Vincent
I'm setting up my next table with Vincent van Gogh as my companion.
It takes me at least an entire day before I'm done with it and satisfied.
Don't know if I'm there yet. The angle , the light , its a search.
I like to make a table with a bit of blue cheese, an Opinel knife from France ,some nuts, sardines and fruit ( I ate half of the apple as I was assembling this table )and an art book to enjoy.
There's a table bell ,a peasant woman ( thinking of Vincent's love for farmers working the land) from my mum who had quite a collection, my Vincent kokeshi doll ( I collect them) and a stoneware ( Staffordshire?)dog we call a prostitute's dog in The Netherlands.
Vincent lived together with Sien Hoornik who was a seamstress and a prostitute and became his partner and model for a while.

The pastis jug stands for Absinthe although the latter is much stronger .
I used a lot of yellow as it makes me think of Vincent and the house in Arles where he rented four rooms and not to forget the sunflowers which I need to look for tomorrow in the flower shop.
Vincent loved to paint flowers so they need to be here .

I often enjoy his work in books or in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
It's sad that he has never known how his work would fly out into the world and would get loved by so many!
Ps. I added fresh flowers, a brush and a palette knife.
